Farm Writers Lunch

Protecting NSW from exotic animal diseases

Friday 19 April 2024

12:00 for 12:30pm

Recent detections of emergency animal diseases such as lumpy skin disease (LSD) in nearby countries means prevention and preparedness are more important than ever.

Biosecurity risks are not only a significant threat to our primary industries, but they can also impact our local communities, economy, environment, and lives.

So how ready is NSW for a biosecurity incursion?

Our guest speaker for this lunch is Jo Coombe, the NSW Chief Veterinary Officer and Director, Animal Biosecurity at the NSW Department of Primary Industries since June 2023.

Join Farm Writers for a Q&A to discuss prevention, preparedness and response to emergency animal and aquatic diseases, and hear how Jo and her team are leading our protection against animal diseases and pests in NSW.

Born in Wales, Jo moved to Australia in 2001 and worked for several years as a dairy vet in Victoria after graduating from the University of Melbourne Faculty of Veterinary Science.

Jo's PhD and post doctorate research evaluated dairy herds, and she has held several roles within Dairy Australia in addition to consulting to various universities and animal industries.

She has been the Secretariat (and the inaugural Chair) of the Animal Industries’ Antimicrobial Stewardship RD&E Strategy and is an invited member of the Australian Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on antimicrobial resistance.

Bookings for this lunch will close on 15 April 2024. Please advise of any dietary requirements at the time of booking.
