Where to for the Basin Plan?

Wednesday 24 June 2026

12:00 for 12:30pm

The same day the Murray-Darling Basin Authority publishes the What We Heard report as part of its review of the Basin Plan, Chief Executive Andrew McConville will address the NSW Rural Press Club.

The MDBA is undertaking the first statutory review since the Basin Plan was implemented in 2012, and the report will be an important milestone capturing community, stakeholder and First Nations perspectives from across the Basin following a 12-week public consultation period.

Andrew's address will reflect on those insights, the range of views coming from Basin towns and farming regions, and why those perspectives matter.

The Basin is Australia’s largest and most complex river system, spanning more than one million square kilometres across New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory. The Basin Plan sets limits on how much water can be taken each year, while leaving enough for the Basin’s rivers, lakes and wetlands and the plants and animals that depend on them.

The MDBA is an independent statutory agency in the Australian Government responsible for the implementation of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan and the execution of the Murray-Darling Basin Agreement. Andrew has been Chief Executive since June 2022.

For more than 30 years, he has been involved in natural resource management and agribusiness both in Australia and internationally. Andrew commenced his career as an agricultural economist with the Victorian state government, ran his own agribusiness consultancy, and has worked for National Australia Bank, AWB Limited, Syngenta, and the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association.
