Guardian Australia branches out: how the Rural Network was born

Rural and Regional editor Gabrielle Chan has been heavily involved in the establishment of Guardian Australia's Rural Network, a three year project funded by the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation, creating content and research insights with the Centre for Media Transition at the University of Technology Sydney.

She has covered politics and rural affairs across News Ltd, the ABC and Guardian Australia, with essays in Meanjin and Griffith Review.

Gabrielle moved from the city to a sheep and wheat farm in 1996 and noticed the gap between parliament and small town life. Rusted Off: Why Country Australia is Fed Up, was shortlisted for both the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards and the Walkley book prize.

Gabrielle’s latest book, Why You Should Give a F**k About Farming, examines how farmers find themselves at the intersection of the world’s existential threats including climate change, geopolitical tensions, soil loss, water short- ages and food security and why every eater has a stake in their future.
